The flashcard program was a game-changer for my SSAT prep. It made studying fun and interactive, especially creating my own flashcards. This approach significantly improved my vocabulary and math skills. I felt much more confident and prepared for the exam after using these effective study tools.

What is the difference between the SSAT and the HSPT? Do I have to take both tests?

The SSAT is a challenging exam that tests students on advanced vocabulary, complex reading comprehension passages, and multi-step math word problems. It is commonly required by competitive private day and boarding schools. I enjoy the challenge of teaching the SSAT and have had great success helping students significantly improve their scores. Students are allowed to take the SSAT more than once, which can be beneficial. In my view, taking an SSAT prep course and sitting for the test is an excellent way to "cut your teeth" on standardized testing, preparing students for the PSAT, SAT, and beyond.

The HSPT is a “one-shot deal,” meaning students typically have only one opportunity to take it, usually in late November or early December. Unlike the SSAT, it cannot be retaken. The HSPT is the entrance exam used by Catholic high schools such as Gonzaga, St. John’s, and other diocesan schools. In my view, the HSPT is a more straightforward test, but it still requires preparation—especially in terms of understanding the format and developing effective test-taking strategies. Pacing is arguably the most critical factor for success, as time constraints are tight. It’s also worth noting that many schools use HSPT scores to award merit-based scholarships.

Some students may want to prepare for both tests depending on their high school choices, but my opinion is that the SSAT is a more challenging test and that, by preparing for the SSAT, the student will find the HSPT to be manageable. I also hold a free Zoom each year in November called “HSPT for the SSAT Student” that will highlight some key facets of the HSPT that students need to be aware of.

Do you offer refunds?

Yes. If your plans change and you now longer need to take a prep course, please let me know in a timely manner and I will refund your tuition.

What happens if I miss a Zoom class?

While it is always nice to have the live, interactive classes, all classes are recorded and posted to the lesson feed in a very timely manner. In fact, most classes are posted in a matter of minutes after they wrap up depending on how long the videos take to process. You should not stress about having to miss a live Zoom class as long as you are committed to watching the recordings and doing the homework.

Do the in person students have the same access as the online students?

Yes! All students have access to the same online platform. In fact, if a student misses an in person class, he or she is encouraged to watch an equivalent video in the lesson feed that will replace the in person class missed.

Can you help with test anxiety or time management issues?

Absolutely. I incorporate strategies for time management, pacing, and confidence-building into every course and tutoring session.

Do you work with students who need extra support or accommodations?

Yes. I have experience working with students who receive testing accommodations and do my best to adjust instruction to meet a variety of learning needs.

His focus is entirely on these exams, ensuring that students receive high-quality, personalized instruction.
